Monae paints biggest Glasto ’11 impression

The best performance of the weekend goes to Janelle Monae, working the crowd for 10 feverish minutes with this version of Come Alive (War of the Roses) off her acclaimed debut The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III). One can’t deny the girl has got a fantastic voice. The dress and colour theme is also eye-catching. Look out at 8 minutes in when security struggle to restrain her from the crowd by clasping her pants! The poor bassist’s fingers must have been in tatters after this… he deserves a medal. Energy + crowd interaction + aesthetics = fabulous showing.

Other highlights of Glasto ’11 include Cee Lo Green literally steaming his way through a 17 song set dressed in what can only be described as the devil’s bondage. Elsewhere, eleven-piece Bellowhead were on typical top form out on the West Rocks Stage exhibiting their eclectic fiddle- accordion-bazouki-kazoo brand of jumpy, uplifting folk melodies. Do listen to Hedonism – the band’s third and latest album; one of my current favourites and approved by all.
